Personal History Workshop–11

What If…–Would That My Life Had Been Different

Go Back to Lesson 10.

We all have regrets. Some are bitter and some are wistful. Write your feelings, but do your best to keep it light, positive, and teaching, like these words from an older man who took the class in my mother’s ward:

  1. I would have tried to meet my wife sooner.
  2. I would have been more sensitive to the needs of my mother as my father sat silent for ten years after a stroke.
  3. I would have learned to play the piano.
  4. I would have controlled my fat intake.
  5. I would have reduced the number of hours I played, and instead used that time reading the great books from great authors.
  6. I would have learned another language, and mastered the English language better.
  7. I would have continued my education.
  8. I would have written a journal acknowledging the Lord’s hand in my life, all of my blessings, and all of the people that influenced me.
  9. I would have guarded my health better, resting occasionally instead of pushing, pushing, pushing.
  10. I would have spent time each day in study of the scriptures from the very day I learned to read.

You may want to create your own list, or write an essay, or explain an event. It’s your history, do what speaks to you. Make it uplifting if you can (there’s a challenge all by itself), but if you can’t, write it so it becomes a teacher to those who will read it.

Challenge:

Write an essay, poem, or list starting with these words, “If I had my life to live over, I would…”
