Humanitarian Aid

Almost twenty years ago, a regular woman, like you and me, was called as the Young Women’s President in her stake.  Her name was Rose Ann Gunther.  After considering the needs of “her girls”, she decided that under her watch, they were going to focus on the church mission.

Every girl in the stake learned the missionary discussions and practiced on their families.  Opportunities came about for some to teach non-member relatives.

Arrangements were made to extract information from microfilms of parish records and do the baptisms for those names.  Each girl participated in the family history portion, as well as standing in as proxy in the temple.

With the support and blessing of the Stake President, all of the budget, for parties, camps, refreshment expenses, planned for her first year as YW President, was used instead to buy supplies to fill humanitarian needs.  Ever after, the stake budget included a humanitarian fund.  It was Rose Ann and her committee that first developed the kits we have all put together at the Humanitarian Center:  Hygiene, School, Newborn kits.  This stake continues to meet every Wednesday all day long; packing, sewing, painting, gathering, etc.
